St. John’s Intergroup is an AA service group that involves a partnership among groups in St. John’s and area, just as an AA group is a partnership of individuals. Intergroup was established to carry out certain functions common to all St. John’s area AA groups, functions which are best handled by a centralized group. It is directed, supported, and financed by the St. John’s area AA community in their general interest. Intergroup exists to aid groups in their primary purpose of carrying the message to the alcoholic who still suffers.
The St. John’s Intergroup adheres to the 12 traditions and Intergroup guidelines approved by the AA General Service Office. Intergroup is 100% ‘responsible to’ the AA groups and is not a governing body. Intergroup representatives have the authority to vote the conscience of their home groups on issues affecting AA in the St. John’s area. Each AA group in the St. John’s area should have an Intergroup representative and/or an alternate. There are approximately 50 registered groups in the St. John’s Area. If your group isn’t represented at Intergroup then your group conscience is not being heard and your group is missing out.
The Intergroup in St. John’s is currently comprised of seven executive positions (including two directors) and its committee members. The representatives, the elected Intergroup, committee chairpersons, directors, and volunteers form the body which takes responsibility for providing the services requested by the St. John’s AA community.
These Group Representatives meet on the last Wednesday of each month at 6:00 pm at The Triangle Social Center at 51 Liverpool Avenue, St. John’s, to discuss common issues regarding the St. John’s area AA community and to plan AA events. Executive meetings are held on the preceding Tuesday. Smaller committees are struck from the main group to deal with specifics of each event and issue.
The St. John’s Intergroup Office is 100% maintained through funds donated to Intergroup by participating AA groups, AA individuals and periodic social and fundraising events within the AA community sponsored by St John’s Intergroup.
The St. John’s Intergroup Office is located at 3 Blackmarsh Road and currently stocks a good supply of Alcoholics Anonymous approved literature and pamphlets for sale to AA groups and individuals. It is incorporated under the name St. John’s Intergroup 2002 Inc.
